Magneetfestival is a cultural festival in Amsterdam that has music, workshops, fine arts, theater, performances and many more. Magneetfestival was the first crowdsourced festival in The Netherlands. By using crowdsourcing they allow the visitor to create the festival. Artists can join with their idea, other people can vote or participate on this idea and if it has enough votes, the project will be presented at the festival. Magneet wants people to participate.
Their motto is ‘No spectators, only participators.’

Magneet means magnet in English. A magnet has two opposites that attract and they give function to each other. Because of the different aspects this festival has to offer, there are lots of different types of people that attract to eachother by the thing they all have in comment: Magneetfestival.

How would it be if we put opposites together so they will attract to eachother and become one?

8 posters

I have created 8 posters that shows how opposites on the festival come together and when you place them correct, they’ll become one.

Ticket

I also wanted to include the participation part of the festival. So I have made a ticket for the festival what visitors have to use on the festival. Visitors can rip parts of the logo of the card. The red shape on the ticket can be fold into an envelope. This envelope can you bring with you to the festival. When they arrive on the festival, the visitor can find a piece of the logo near each music stage. Visitors will be asked to attach the square that fits on the food. Eventually, the whole block will be filled and everything/everyone participated to design the festival.

Bracelet

Magneetfestival is also about meeting people where you can collaborate with. Every visitor who ordered a weekend ticket will get a bracelet that matches with 30 other people on the festival.

Each bracelet is numbered with an odd or even number. They can only match with the opposite sort of number but also with the opposite colours. When the visitor found their match, they can collect a free drink together at the bar.

Programmebook

Magneetfestival takes place in the east of Amsterdam. 2 Weekends a year the empty sandvalley will fill up with this awesome festival. I created a programmebook to show what’s on every day. I have made 2 opposite books that match when they lay next to each other.

I have made this project while I was on exchange at Plymouth University. I had the chance to create our own brief and work on it for 6 weeks. I got an A+ on this project.

In my second year at Minerva you could chose specialization classes. I chose for screen print. We were asked by the teacher to do something with a newspaper. You could choose by yourself what you wanted to do with the newspaper. It was a totally different approach than I was used to, but therefore very effective. I started by reading newspapers and looking for what attracted my attention. The only thing I constantly noticed was that I am not fond of reading it, so I wanted to do something with this. At first I started with making very small books that were difficult to fold. At a certain moment I made a compact book and on every page stood only one word. I thought this was very interesting because therefore it was very hard and difficult to read. You almost got reluctant to read it. As a result, I have chosen to make a book on A2 format and the weather forecast as a text. On every page there were 12 characters, without spaces. When I went to the screen print department. I pressed it in a very fast and chaotic way so that the concept reinforces the fact that I don’t like to read a newspaper.

For the past six weeks I’ve been working on an assignment from Plymouth University, I had to re-brand a charity of my choice. I chose the charity ‘Alzheimer’s Society’. Alzheimer’s Society improves the quality of life of people who are affected with Alzheimer’s disease. I wanted to highlight the positives of the charity and I didn’t want to put too much attention on the disease. My brand is build on one icon that changes with every subject or event. We had to create the following products: 3 posters, a donation box and a website.

Directors cut

For our first module I made a typeface that only shows the essence of type. I made a poster, a book and a promotion article. My concept is based on a quote from Ridley Scott: ‘Cut if not important’.

———————————————

Another part of the assignment was to make a letterpress work. I printed the quote from Ridley Scott with woodtype on paper with thick ink so it got a different texture. I also inked the vowels partly because you can leave them away if you want to.
————————————-

Experimental type
I made this in the beginning of the assignment. You had to make a experimental type with the directors name. Ridley Scott is a big fan of architecture and different shapes, so I made a shape with his name. I did this with ink and used the colors which he mostly uses in his films.

For my school assignment I did some experiments with Jell-o and ice cubes. I filled the ice cubes with tea and tomato. I cut the jell-o in the letters RIDLEY because I have to make a type based on his directors work. This experiment is based on interesting textures where you eventually can make your type with. I made these in the beginning stage of the project, but now I already changed my concept to something different what I will share when it’s finished.

In February 2014 we were able to choose our own subject. These specialization courses exist so students can expand their knowledge in an area of their choosing. I chose to do the subject Print Studio. I had the opportunity to make something I want. Creative freedom was the most important aspect of this course.

With a group of 5 people we made an interpretation of the Kama Sutra. We believe that today’s ‘Kama Sutra’ is reflected in a contrived separation between love and sex. This book of 50 illustrations, has no front or back and leads you from platonic love for shoes to pure sexual debauchery vice versa.

The techniques that were used are linocut and screen print. Above you will see a selection of images made by me.

For an assignment I did some research about the kind of materials there are in a bone. There are two materials that I wanted to use with this project, calcium phosphate and collagen. Collagen is a connective tissue that looks like  is made of sticky dreads. Calcium phosphate looks like powder.

With white paint I made a few characters and with a purple blow pen I blew over the paint to see what kind of effect this would get. The white paint - that stands for the sticky dreads of collagen - formed itself in different unexpected directions and the purple ink mixed itself in the white paint but in a way you can still see the little dots, that stands for calcium phosphate. Eventually I didn’t use these for my assignment but I really like the effect.
